This is an open letter to you.

Yes, you: You! Are! The 3.5%!

We are in a historic moment where a new cultural, political, ecological reality must emerge and replace the dominant paradigm. The planet itself, to say nothing of the overwhelming majority of human beings, can no longer live with the killer that is global corporate capitalism in our midst.

Research of hundreds of resistance movements shows that no resistance movement in the last 100 years has failed when 3.5 percent of the population participate. How close are we to that tipping point? We may be closer than you think.

So, you are cordially invited, challenged even- to become part of the 3.5 percent; to commit to an action or actions starting April 4, 2014 against the corporate controlled State and it’s paradigm that preys on the resources and spirits of people. Your actions, and the actions of others, will become a ripple that crisscross with other ripples, each coming from their own centers of daring. These ripples can build a current that can wipe out the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

Okay, so Robert F. Kennedy said that. They killed him. So it goes.

You who else they killed? Martin Luther King, Jr. Think they killed him because he had a dream?

No.

They put him on a stamp because he had a dream. They killed him, neutered him, and packaged him up all nice and delivered a version of him to your children’s history books that omits the really dangerous ideas he was proposing like a guaranteed income for all.  King was ready to wage a war on poverty, and today we have the reverse:  a war on the poor.

It is perhaps for that reason that the recent call for a crowd sourced worldwide wave of action put forth by Anonymous suggests a 3 month span beginning on around April 4, 2014:  the 50^th anniversary of Martin Luther Kings assassination. The naysayers and propagandist will be quick to dismiss the next fissure that erupts through the façade of Empire by saying we are not focused enough. Once again they will ask: what is your demand?

As the call from Anonymous states:

“Throughout history, when people have fought against tyranny and oppression, they didn’t have one perfect utopian model outcome agreed upon beforehand. They just knew that the invading and old systems were detrimental to their wellbeing and had to go. We are now in that position.”

You are now in that position. Leverage it.

Jeremy Hammond, speaking to Guardian reporter Ed Pilkington just one day before he was sentenced to the maximum sentence of 10 years for exposing the spying of StratFor, a private corporate spying firm that often works with US intelligence agencies said:

“I knew when I started out with Anonymous that being put in jail and having a lengthy sentence was a possibility. Given the nature of the targets I was going after I knew I would upset a lot of powerful people.”

The Federal Court for the Southern District of New York was packed on with supporters, journalists and activists who see Jeremy Hammond’s actions as a form of civil disobedience, motivated by a desire to protest and expose the secret activities of private intelligence corporations.

In his sentencing statement, Hammond said:

“The acts of civil disobedience and direct action that I am being sentenced for today are in line with the principles of community and equality that have guided my life. I hacked into dozens of high profile corporations and government institutions, understanding very clearly that what I was doing was against the law, and that my actions could land me back in federal prison. But I felt that I had an obligation to use my skills to expose and confront injustice—and to bring the truth to light.

Could I have achieved the same goals through legal means? I have tried everything from voting petitions to peaceful protest and have found that those in power do not want the truth to be exposed. When we speak truth to power we are ignored at best and brutally suppressed at worst. We are confronting a power structure that does not respect its own system of checks and balances, never mind the rights of it’s own citizens or the international community.”

I'm really glad that this is coming out. I can't find feeds of the Occucopter and other video sources that show the police dumping trash on people's belongings, and throwing laptops and books into the back of garbage trucks that I livetweeted about back when the raid was happening.

Anonymous has released many hours of surveillance camera and NYPD TARU footage of the Nov. 15 Liberty Plaza raid. No details how they got hold of it (hack? whistle blower?), but it's 11 GiB of semi-organized footage.







They're asking for people to help comb through it and report instances of police misconduct, inconsistencies in the videos suggestive of tampering, etc.

The idea behind direct democracy is that nobody can represent you better than you.  Why should I be representing that woman in Florida?  She should represent her.  Send a person to her house, and interview her.  Tell her story.  We are all individuals.  I don't have a right to speak on her behalf.  She should speak on her behalf.

The idea that some people are able to speak better for us than ourselves, is part of the problem with our government, and with our media.  You are lazy.  If the news actually spent money looking into how bad shit was here at home, instead of just repeating what government officials said all day long, maybe this would be a non-issue.

But it's not a non-issue.  It's very much an issue.  Why should WE be the ones to do YOUR job?  We aren't the media, you are.  You should be coming to us to learn about our struggle.

The GA's held in lower Manhattan aren't meant to represent everybody in the world.  People can hold their own GAs in their own towns and self-organize.

Indiana Appellate Court: Commenter on Newspaper Website May Have First Amendment Right to Anonymity

Case Was Closely Watched by Media Companies

WASHINGTON, D.C. - People who post comments on newspapers' websites may have the First Amendment right to remain anonymous, an Indiana appellate court ruled today.

As a result, the plaintiff who sued for defamation must produce evidence that a particular anonymous commenter's post on The Indianapolis Star's website was false, and the lower court must weigh whether the commenter's identity should be revealed, the appellate court said.

Public Citizen argued in December 2011 in support of The Indianapolis Star, contending that to unmask the commenter, the court must notify the commenter, prove that the comment was false and balance the commenter's First Amendment right of anonymous free speech against the merits of a defamation claim. Public Citizen acted as amicus in the case.

"With this decision, Indiana joins the growing consensus in state and federal courts around the country that the Dendrite balancing test is the best way to reconcile the free speech rights of anonymous Internet speakers against the interest of plaintiffs who really have been wronged by online speech in pursuing genuine legal claims," said Paul Alan Levy, the Public Citizen attorney who argued the case. "Requiring proof and a showing of genuine need for the speaker's identity can help prevent powerful interests from discouraging criticism by the threat of baseless litigation."

The case began after a March 2010 story was published in The Indianapolis Star about whether Junior Achievement, a local charity organization, misappropriated grant money. An anonymous person - using the pseudonym "DownWithTheColts" - posted a comment on the newspaper website alleging that the organization's missing money could be found in the former president's bank account.

One of the organization's former presidents, Jeffrey Miller, filed a suit for defamation, among other claims, against Junior Achievement, the foundation whose grant was in question and their respective presidents, and the anonymous commenter. A lower court ordered the newspaper to reveal the identity of the commenter.

In December 2011, Public Citizen, along with two separate groups of media organizations and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, submitted amicus briefs urging the appellate court to consider the First Amendment right to speak anonymously before unmasking the commenter.

This message is an urgent warning to the people of the United States. The government has been plotting treason against you.

An addition to the National Defense Authorization Act, Sections 1031 and 1032, will allow the United States government to imprison any person who commits any act they disagree with indefinitly and without trial. Section 1031 reads, "A covered person under this section" includes, "any person who has committed a belligerent act." All persons accused do not get a trial. The Feinstein Amendment, 1031 e, states that, "nothing in this section shall be construed." The Supreme Court are the only ones with the power to construe laws. If this law is passed exactly 24 hours after this video is published, there is no turning back.

They will call us liberals and fanatics. Those are words. Look at the proof. The United States government is decieving you. If you do not wake up now, it will be too late. Your last day of freedom is today. Will you ignore this message and continue your day without another thought? Or will you fight back against this corrupt and vile government? The choice is yours. The latter is best. Petitions will not work this time. Corporates and Billionaires have backed up this law and the government is certain that you will not take action. UPDATED: The Guardian is reporting tonight that Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna also stands accused of false arrest and civil rights violations in a claim brought by a protester involved in the 2004 demonstrations at the Republican National Convention. Then, 1,800 people were arrested during protests against the Iraq war and the policies of president George W Bush. Alan Levine, a civil rights lawyer representing a protester at the event, told the Guardian that he filed an action against Bologna and another officer in 2007. The case is expected to be heard next year.

Why this is so cool: People are working together, anonymously, through the internet, spilling into the real world, and are achieving message amplification and multiplication together.
One person designs a poster, somebody else puts a bunch of copies of it up (huge copies! They are like 3'x5'!), and a third person writes an op-ed piece in a newspaper about it.
And the kicker is, none of them even know one another.
That, to me, is amazing.

Two separate acts of graffiti. Two mixed messages for Portland.

For the few that did not stay up until the wee hours of Monday morning, the news that Osama Bin Laden had been killed in a raid on a compound in Pakistan came as a shock. For at least one Portland resident, it didn’t.

This half-witted knucklehead grabbed a can of spray paint, and decided to do a little graffiti action all over the exterior walls of a mosque on Andersen street.

To the person that did it, I express this simple message. You are a congenital idiot. Your actions made about as much sense as painting the word “pedophile” on the walls of a church. If you want to scare residents of this neighborhood, show them your I.Q. score. Your dumb move ranks you as about as intelligent at those knuckleheads who protest at funerals.

The Somali and Bantu population in Maine moved here to get AWAY from the Taliban and Al-Queda elements, remember? You just showed them that stupidity travels faster than tolerance.

Another graffitti showed up on Tuesday morning. Less than 36 hours after the announcement Sunday night, the overpass on Forest Avenue and I-295 was plastered with at least a dozen posters, each about 2feet by 5 feet. Huge lettering read “Bin Laden Dead — Troops Come Home.”




I happened to see that one on my way into work. My brother caught me at the bus stop, and offered me a lift into town. My first reaction on seeing those posters was simple. I reflected to myself that wow, it really didn’t take long [after the news of Bin Laden's death] for 9 years of frustration about kids coming home in boxes to make someone get their message of frustration out.

I popped down after work to get a photo, and just seven hours later all the signs had been ripped down and shredded on one side of the street, save one. Apparently, whoever tore those down was unwilling to play “frogger on Forest” to get to the other side to rip those down.



Two messages, one of hatred and one of hope. One water-blasted by a city contractor, one destroyed by someone who apparently likes kids getting shot at.

Some history for you, the reader. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed an “aid agreement” with the initial group that would become the Afghan insurgency. We would pass them aid, and supplies, and hopefully, they would manage to suck Soviet troops into what US Secretary of State Zbigniew Brzezinski called “The Afghan Trap.”

Eventually, that group became funded by Reagan and Bush. It was a 9 year long war that killed 14,453 soldiers. Eventually, Gorbachev saw that there was no winning, and decided to pull his troops.

Nine Years. We’ve been at it for nine and a half, lost 2538 people, and had over 10 thousand wounded. Somebody call that former Secretary Of State and ask him about that whole “trap” thing.

Two messages, both politically “unacceptable.” One more so than the other, as it involves hate speech. One torn down because if you don’t “support the troops,” you are scum.

Last week, I was watching this older movie “Gardens of Stone,” a grim story of the burial detail at Arlington National Cemetery. In it, one character wants to get to Viet Nam, to where the “action” is. He relates a story of a helicopter coming back covered with arrows, laughing at the indigenous people using such crude methods. He gets straightened out buy a tough old sergeant. “Can you win against an enemy that is willing to fight you until all that is left is bows and arrows?”

This week, with the killing of Bin Laden, perhaps we as a country have had that “Aha!” bow and arrow moment.

Both messages were similar in this single respect. No matter how we as a city pride ourselves for being included on “best this and that” lists, we still have not learned much.
