ExxonMobil plans to build a toxin-spewing export terminal on the shores of Casco Bay in Maine.

According to 350.org:
“Such a terminal would allow the flow of millions of gallons of Canadian tar sands to be transported through the region, putting our planet, our local waterways, and community health at unacceptable risk.
All evidence indicates that ExxonMobil – the majority owner of the PMPL - wants to pump toxic tar sands oil through New England and South Portland is now a crucial battle line in the fight to stop them.
In addition to the climate change risks of tar sands oil production, additional local impacts – with or without with a spill or rupture – would be devastating.

As the CCSP says firmly, "The threats that tar sands pose to our environment, health, water supply and air quality are simply unacceptable." “

MSNBC “Leaning Forward” To Promote Fracking

With the knowledge that the day is coming when the digital side of media consumption will outpace the cable television side of the business, Cable news stations are scrambling to carve out space in the digital realm. MSNBC, for example, recently unveiled a completely redesigned website. The site prioritizes focused user interaction over exposure to a wide range of topics- with only 10 stories on the main page at any given time. MSNBC executive editor Phil Griffin said “We are the platform for the Lean Forward, progressive community. We hope it benefits television, but it will be in and of itself its own medium.”

The Lean Forward Brand for cable TV was pushed on us with a series of 30 second spots wherein the MSNBC personalities would speak to us from the heart about what makes them progressive, the ultimate objective of coarse, was to increase our trust in those personalities, and in turn, what they say.

Joining me today to discuss the implications of Native advertising is Steve Horn. Steve is a Madison, WI-based Research Fellow for DeSmogBlog and a freelance investigative journalist. My Testimony at the South Portland City Council hearing on Tar Sands

Hi there.

My name is Asher Platts, I live in Portland.

I grew up in an oil family. I have been inside of the corporate offices of Exxon-Mobil in Dallas and Fort Worth. I grew up reading industry memos and publications. For that reason I want to thank all the oil executives for coming out here today to spread disinformation and thwart democracy.

Disinformation doesn't have to be false-- most of the information they presented tonight, like the stuff about the ambient temperature of the pipeline and so forth, while much if it may have been factually true, had nothing to do with tar sands. I thought that was clever of them to include so much irrelevant information to distract us from the issue at hand. Well done.

We hear a lot about how Portland Pipeline creates jobs here in South Portland. I happen to know that Portland Pipeline is hostile towards their union. I believe it's the USW. I think that's great. Because really-- why should workers get paid? I mean at all? And if you have workers falling off of the docks into freezing cold ocean water-- I say, "let the free market decide whether or not there is adequate guard rails."

Now one of the cardinal rules of business is that the opportunity for profit comes with risk-- to which I say, "so what?"

Let's remember what's really at stake here-- millions of dollars for a small number of corporate executives. I mean, are we going to let the health and safety of the people of Southern Maine stand in the way of THAT?

I know I personally would be glad to die of cancer so that an oil executive could make even one additional dollar. So long as they are able to turn a profit, I will know my untimely death will not have been in vain.

I would urge you to vote in favor of re-permitting these smoke stacks so that tar sands can be brought to South Portland from Canada. It's our duty as Americans to make sure that the people who have all the money always get exactly what they want, no matter how many people suffer because of it.

POLICE VIOLENCE TODAY IN BURLINGTON VT

Today in Burlington, VT there was the Conference of Governors, who met with Provincial Premiers of Canada to discuss, among other things, the Tar Sands pipeline that will be going from Fort Murray, Alberta to Portland, ME:



As the Delegate Buses were leaving, Occupy New England Regional Gathering formed a blockade to send a message about Tar Sands.

The police responded by firing pepper balls, rubber bullets, spraying pepper spray, and beating people with nightsticks.



Said Kara, an eyewitness, "The Riot police geared up, skipped buttoning their clothes, and slammed people into the ground soon after they had used pepperspray and shooting rubber bullets at the protesters. This was the first time."

According to Kara, the protesters were not detered by police violence, and regrouped to form a second soft block for a second bus. The police proceeded to respond to nonviolent tactics with violence.

At least 6 injured.
